Joanne's Positive HypnoBirthing Story 2.0
My Second birth
Cheryl, my little HypnoBirthing baby girl~
We attended HypnoBirthing class in Aug 2016 to prepare for my first birth. Although it wasn't my ideal birth during my first delivery, I had no fear for my second birth as we knew we were well prepared. We attended a refresher class in Dec 2018 to get ourselves prepared.
The surges began around 2.15am and released more mucus plug. The surges were frequent but bearable. Surges lasted about 1 min and rested 7 mins in between. I got myself a bottle of strong raspberry leaf tea which is said to be able to help to strengthen uterus hence helps during labour. At about 4am, we sent my son to my mom and took my first meal (this time I had fried rice at 4am!) I could still walk and talk so we knew it was early labour.
Had the first vaginal exam (VE) (which I hate the most) at around 6am. I was only 2cm dilated (oh my god.. long way to go.... ) We decided to admit into the hospital and get some rest. I requested for a birth ball and at the same time, we played the rainbow relaxation CD while continuing my surge breathing.
Was unable to sleep as the surges were really intense. I knew I was in active labour and I insisted that I wanted to stand up while hugging the birth ball. With the help of gravity, I believed staying upright would definitely speed up my labour. The nurse requested to perform CTG to inform doctor my progress, but I was reluctant as I did not want to be strapped onto the bed.
Doctor came around 10am and I was being transferred to the labour room. A second VE performed and YAY it was 8cm dilated now and we knew baby was coming out very soon!!
We learnt from our mistake during the first birth experience so this time round, I prepared lots of snacks and energy drinks just in case it turned out to be a long labour again. I chose to stand up straight and squat deeply every time the surges came. Dr Eli again asked my permission for membrane sweeping. She said it would help ease the tension so we were fine with it.
Water broke and I continued doing deep squat every surge until baby's head was visible!! Yes! Unbelievable!! And this time, I could feel the so called “Ring of Fire” feeling!! Thank God it's really fast this time. To co-operate with Dr Eli, I got back to the bed and with her help, baby is out in just a few minutes!!
My second delivery was so much easier. I did not have episiotomy (aka vagina cut) - just a little tear which required minimal stitching. Completely Drug Free (no pain killer, no gas, no IV and etc), fully in control and well informed.
I'm so blessed that I attended HypnoBirthing (Mongan Method) class. It's not only about the method of giving birth, it's about how well are you prepared for your birth.
I'm very happy to share my positive birth stories. Every mom deserve a positive birth!!!

WHAT IS A POSITIVE BIRTH?
The International Positive Birth Movement believes that every woman deserves a positive birth. But what does this mean?
A positive birth means a birth in which a woman feels she has freedom of choice, access to accurate information, and that she is in control, powerful and respected. A birth that she approaches, perhaps with some trepidation, but without fear or dread, and that she then goes on to enjoy, and later remember with warmth and pride.
A positive birth does not have to be ‘natural’ or ‘drug free’ – it simply has to be informed from a place of positivity as opposed to fear. The Positive Birth Movement is woman-centred and as such respects a woman’s human right to choose where and how she has her baby.
You can birth with positivity in hospital or at home, with or without medical intervention. You can have a positive caesarean, or a positive home water birth. Positive Birth is about approaching birth realistically, having genuine choice, and feeling empowered by your experience.
The Positive Birth Movement believes that communication is the key to shaking up birth. By coming together, in real life and online, and sharing experiences, feelings, knowledge and wisdom, women can take back childbirth.
