Johnny's Testimonial - Johnny is definitely one of my favourite dads. I remember he was the one who came up to me after my talk to inquire about class. That is always a tell-tale sign of a fantastic dad.
I am glad to hear about HypnoBirthing from one of the talk about Gentle Birth during Motherhood Expo at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in March 2013. Both my wife and I felt excited to learn about this gentle way of birthing for our first kid. By participating in Celebrating Birth and Motherhood, which organized by Gentle Birth Group Malaysia, we get to know Bee Ting, who is one of the certified HypnoBirthing practitioner in Malaysia. We had approached Bee Ting immediately after her interesting talk for the HypnoBirthing course enrollment. (So co-incident we met another couple who had the same EDD as ours). Hence, we had started our learning path towards a gentle and natural birth methodology (luckily we managed to complete the class before receive our first daughter).
We had learned a lot of preparation work like getting the birth plan set, relaxing technique, breathing technique as well as roles as birth companion, which is my role as the husband & father to my new born daughter. Base on my own experience, a gentle & natural birth can be easily achieved with fully support from birth companion. Birth companion (here I’m referring to husband) is not as easy as just settle hospital bill, but need to provide full support, both mentally and physically to the wife during the pre and post birthing process. On the actual labour day (and it was the public holiday – Labour Day too), I managed to spent all the time with my wife because I did the pre-registration with the hospital earlier (yes, please do so to avoid time spending on registration and you could spend all the time to be with your wife).
Thanks to Bee Ting, who had taught me on the techniques that I can use to calm and relax my wife for gentle birthing. I chit chat with my wife, took meal together, did light touch massage for her, read relaxation script to her and of course hugged and kissed her (one of the way to promote hormone oxytocin)! Finally we received our daughter naturally without any drugs and medical intervention. Few of my friends advised me not to witness the baby crowning because I may feel irritation. But since I had watched few birth videos during the Hypnobirthing classes, I was well prepared, therefore I witnessed & received our daughter. I even described to my wife how the membrane looks like (the perfect and strong membrane only ruptured after the cervix fully diluted) & I cut the umbilical cord by my own! With sufficient oxygen and blood transferred into our daughter with the delay cord clamping, our daughter looks alert and healthy. While waiting for the pulse to stop, our baby was being carried to my wife for bonding and baby started to suck on her breast.
Birth process can be as gentle and natural like this. Agreed with this sentence: “Since woman is born with the capability to give birth, definitely the body can be re-acting naturally for the birth”. So for parent to-be, be calm, relax and listen to positive birth story (like this storyJ) as much as possible. From my personal opinion, a gentle and natural birth will have great impact for the future of a baby as well as the mother. Just to share, my daughter is Hypnobirth baby and fully breastfeed baby too! Start it with natural, gentle and moving on with whatever best for the kid.
