Huey Tyng's 'One Shoot' Natural Birth
27/5/18

8.30pm, We had dinner in Publika, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As we got to the car ready to go home, my waters broke suddenly while waiting in the car. So we went directly to the hospital.
9pm, We admitted directly to the emergency room and was then directed to the delivery room. At that time, I did not feel any contractions yet.
9.30pm, The nurses needed to do some checks but I said I feel like having a bowel movement. I had a HUGE clearing of the bowels then. The nurses checked the baby heartbeat and did a vaginal exam to see how open was my cervix (neck of uterus/womb) and reported that I was open 1 cm.
10.30pm, My husband went to do the admission paperwork while I chatting with my in laws who had turned up with concern. I told them to go home to sleep. It is still very early labor so it will take some time as I still wasnt feeling any pain.
11pm, My husband went home for his shower + collect some things that we had missed packing into my bag. I also asked the nurse if I could shower and it felt so comfortable after I had washed my hair and showered!
28/5/18
About 1.30am, I began to feel contractions, but they were relatively far apart. I could also sleep and only woke up when I feel the contractions.
2 am-4am, I had been in contraction for some time but still not pain. The contractions only felt like I had eaten something wrong, the discomfort in the tummy is like the diarrhea feeling. It was uncomfortable, but fortunately my husband was there to chat with me. The fetal heart rate monitor machine displayed my contractions index as about 50-60.
4am My contractions started to get more intense. The whole stomach tighten in an uncontrollable manner. The machine now showed that my contractions index had increased to 100. My baby has been moving down, as the midwife had to keep adjusting the position of my fetal heart rate monitor downwards. The midwives also began to come in and get ready. She checked my cervix opening and it has dilated to 8 cm. My husband had been by my side to encourage me and told me to breathe, relax, help me massage my head, trying to help me relax.
6am, The doctor came in at about this time. After one contraction, the nurse called me to lie down on my left side. I was told the baby was lacking a bit of oxygen. Everyone waited for one more contraction, then they asked me to turn around and told me to prepare to birth my baby at the next wave of contractions. The doctor began to disinfect the lower body and cut my pubic hair.
6.30am, The contractions are very intense now. Everyone told me that the baby was near. I was instinctively breathing down, clutching my husband's hand so hard that he thought the arm would break. With that one push, my child was born! Everyone said I did great - to be able to birth him with only 1 shoot!
My husband did not immediately realise that the baby was out! That is because he was so focused on supporting me. We also did not realise that the doctor had made a cut at the vaginal opening (episiotomy).
My husband asked the doctor to let the cord blood flow to the baby first before clamping and cutting the cord. The doctor also helped me to set my placenta aside. I held my baby to my chest. As I looked into his alert eyes, he was very calm, no crying. He looked very relaxed. I still could not believe that I had given birth to him!
Then the doctor started to stitch up my wound. Somehow, I felt that my body was unconsciously tightening up. It was quite painful. My husband followed my baby to be weighed and checked.
PS: All the timeline in this story was told to me by my husband. I could not see the clock and instrument panels. I was completely not aware of the passing time. I thought it was a very quick process only to be told it took longer than I thought.
The doctor has really good timing. He only came in for two more contractions before I gave birth. He must be very experienced + very calm.
I found that going to the toilet after giving birth was more painful than the birth process itself (possibly due to the episiotomy wound?)
I still could not believe that I DID IT! I gave birth to the cute baby! He looked very cute, this is my son, oh!
